Food Safety Consultancy

Rate my place; find out how likely it is your food inspector will award you 5 stars

Working with food inspectors this week I asked why all their food safety award fridge magnets were being boxed up. The answer was simple, the local authority had introduced a food hygiene rating system, but this was now being replaced by a nationally recognised system, supported by the Food Standard Agency. As a result the scoring system had changed and their system no longer satisfied the new criteria.

So what did this mean to food businesses throughout the food authority? For most very little; nobody was believed to be so bad that they would score the new zero rating, but borderline 5, 4 and 3 star ratings could lose one of their stars.

For a business this would be devastating and customers would think food hygiene standards have fallen.

Every business seeks continuous improvement, so to taking a step backward needs to be avoided at all costs. It is with in mind that we have introduced “Rate My Place”. A service to businesses who want to check what star rating a food inspector is likely to award them at their next food safety inspection.

When our food inspectors rate your place they will be able to tell you how well you comply with food law and score you in the following three areas:

• Food hygiene and safety

• Structure, equipment and cleaning

• Training of managers and food handlers

• Confidence in food management systems

The lower our food inspector’s score the better the premises is in terms of legal compliance and more stars you are likely to be awarded by your local authority, at their next inspection.
